Academic linguistics is the study and description of analogue patterns and how we use descriptions and language across a variety of contexts.  Forensics use the knowledge in areas such as police interviews, courtrooms or writings that become part of an investigation.  In some cases if there is already a suspect police use and compare writings of the individual against the incriminating documents.  After this they need to try suspect who wrote them.  In more recent cases these include analyses of terrorist conspiracy documents, fraudulent suicide notes and threatening emails.  In cases where there isn’t a suspect the police analyse the notes and try and find out what kind of character the suspect has.
